Brighton Unveils First National Open Water Swimming Centre with New Outdoor Heated Pool

Brighton has welcomed the grand opening of an exciting addition to its seafront attractions: Sea Lanes Brighton, the UK’s inaugural national open-water swimming center. Situated on the once-abandoned land of Madeira Drive, the centerpiece of this facility is a 50-meter (164-foot) six-lane pool, uniquely heated and located outdoors.

To make use of this extraordinary facility, individuals can either become members or reserve their spot in advance on a pay-per-swim basis. The inaugural ceremony saw the presence of retired Olympic swimmer Kerri Anne Payne, who officially inaugurated the pool, further highlighting the significance of this development.

Since its launch, Sea Lanes Brighton has already witnessed an impressive response, with over 1,250 individuals signing up for membership. As part of its commitment to providing a comprehensive swimming experience, the facility offers beachside cold showers and complimentary lockers for sea swimmers.

Joe McNulty, Director of Sea Lanes Brighton, expressed his excitement, stating, “Throughout this incredible journey, we have worked closely with the local community, ensuring that our design pays homage to Brighton’s rich heritage and natural environment. Our vision has been to transform a derelict brownfield site into what we believe will soon become another iconic destination in Brighton.”

Recognizing the importance of preserving the city’s architectural treasures, Sea Lanes Brighton meticulously designed the structure to harmonize with the neighboring Grade II Madeira Terraces. This commitment to blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment reflects the deep respect the project has for Brighton’s distinctive character.

With the launch of this innovative open-water swimming center, Brighton invites residents and visitors alike to indulge in a unique swimming experience that combines the beauty of the seaside with state-of-the-art amenities. Sea Lanes Brighton is poised to make waves as a significant landmark in the city’s vibrant coastal landscape.
