The event, held in Lenzerheide, witnessed Atherton, a remarkable five-time world champion, claim the women’s elite title in a remarkable time of three minutes and 7.514 seconds. The Swiss rider, Camille Balanche, secured second place, delighting the home crowd with her impressive performance.
In an astonishing debut, 18-year-old Jordan Williams conquered the men’s elite competition, cementing his name among the mountain biking elite. Williams blazed through the course with finesse, finishing with a remarkable time of 2 minutes and 39.222 seconds.
Atherton’s triumph was made even more special as she shared the moment with her two-year-old daughter, Arna, who was present to witness her mother’s victory. Reflecting on the experience, Atherton expressed her overwhelming emotions, stating, “I want to cry. People said, ‘leave her at home and come out and focus on yourself,’ but having her here helps me relax and takes your mind off it.”
Atherton further revealed her pre-race nerves, explaining how her daughter’s presence alleviated the pressure. “This morning I woke up at 5 am and was like, ‘oh my god, I’m so nervous.’ So I went into her room and I was like, ‘yo, do you want to play?’ It takes your mind off it, and it’s so good, I would recommend it!”
Joining Balanche on the podium, Germany’s Nina Hoffman secured third place with a commendable time of 3 minutes and 8.301 seconds.
With Williams’ impressive debut, British riders enjoyed a triumphant day at the first UCI Mountain Bike Downhill World Cup of the season. France’s Loris Vergier secured second place with a time of 2 minutes and 39.717 seconds, closely followed by his compatriot Loic Bruni, who finished third with a time of 2 minutes and 39.907 seconds.
